Base Camp: 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Select

Before digging in to this one, we need you to put aside your misgivings about the Blue Oval using ‘Mustang’ in the title of this car. Plenty of digital ink has been spilled on the subject and Ford isn’t changing their mind any time soon; we’ll have to live with it.
Beyond the badge, the Mach-E represents one of the biggest gambles to come out of Dearborn since the original Taurus. Tesla has proven customers will actually line up to buy electric vehicles that don’t look or drive like unfinished science projects, forcing the mass-market automakers to craft electron eaters with a bit more style. In this light, perhaps the Mustang moniker is a good idea; after all, if this thing was called the Edge Electric or something, it’s unlikely we would be talking about it at length.
The entry-level model of the Mach-E is called the Select and carries a sticker price of $50,495. At this price, it is important to note the car is rear-wheel drive, drawing just 266hp and 317 lb-ft of torque from its electric drivetrain. With a battery capacity of 68 kWh, total range is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 350 km. Adding all-wheel drive to the Select pads the price by $3,400 and shaves about 30km of range. It does boost torque to 428 lb-ft, however.
Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of driving aids is standard, including adaptive cruise control and lane centering. An enormous 15.5-inch capacitive touch infotainment screen handles most of the car’s duties and, despite standing proudly upright, looks far more integrated than anything else currently in Ford’s lineup (the Explorer design team should take note). This is in addition to a slim 10.2-inch digital cluster dead ahead of the driver. USB and power ports abound, as does a wireless charger. This trim’s Comfort & Technology package costs $3,390 and includes really-oughta-be-standard items like heated seats and hands free liftgate.
The cribbing of Mustang’s tri-bar taillights aside, Mach-E exterior design language is not offensive and it’ll take a trained eye to tell the difference between this entry-rung trim and a higher price point. Still, any paint hue other than something based on the greyscale is extra cost. The shade of Carbonized Grey is shown here.
What We’d Choose
Sticking with the Select trim may be the best idea, given the next-level Premium is a $8250 walk and – absent of extra-cost options – provides no more power or range than the base model. Popping for all-wheel drive on the Select is recommended, since it not only provides a dose of all-weather grip but also boosts torque by well over a third compared to the rear-drive car.
So equipped, your new Mach-E will run over 300 km on a single charge and scoot to highway speeds from rest in just 5.2 seconds. With performance like that, perhaps the Mustang badge makes a modicum of sense after all.
