Ferrari F8 Gets Cut, Becomes F8 Spider
This is the open-top version of the F8 Tributo
Ferrari has just revealed it’s latest topless work of art. This time it’s the F8 getting the Spider treatment, letting drivers enjoy the breeze and the sun. And more importantly, hear even more of that V8 howl.
This is the open-top version of the F8 Tributo that debuted last February in Geneva. That means that it gets the 711 hp, 3.9 twin-turbo V8 monster that howls underneath the plexiglass engine cover of its sibling. Only here, instead of a clear cover, there’s a solid one. Housing the car’s electrically retractable hard roof.
Ferrari says that they style the car around that roof. Shifting the line that separates body from roof from the usual belt-line level to a place above the B-pillar. That’s made the styling what it is, but has also made the roof itself more compact. Since it only needs to fill the space from top of B-pillar to windshield header. The smaller top can be cut into two pieces letting them store it on top of the engine. That retractable hardtop can be deployed or retracted in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h.
711 hp from the engine means it has 50 hp more than the 488 Spider it replaces. The 568 lb-ft of torque ensuring it has 7 torques more than that car. It can run 2.9 seconds to 100 km/h or flat out at 340 km/h. That’ll ruffle your hair. It includes the titanium rods, crank, and flywheel the Pista got plus the Inconel exhaust manifolds from the 488 Challenge that trimmed loads of weight from the engine.
Ferrari says that the car tips the scales at 1,400 kg. That’s 70 kilos more than the Tributo it’s based on. But it’s 20 kg less than the convertible that came before it, and just 20 kg more than the far more extreme Pista Spider.
At the back, the rear wing is all new. It’s larger, and it wraps around the taillights. Ferrari says that makes the center of gravity of the car look lower, even if there’s no physical change to it. It also allows for the twin-light cluster and body-colour tail that was the signature of Ferrari’s early eight-cylinder mid-engine cars.Like the 308 GTB.
Inside, the F8 Spider gets special new sports seats, and some slightly changed shapes to set the car apart from its closed-top sibling.
