Nissan Prices 2020 Kicks, Adds Safety Tech

Nissan has added Safety Shield 360

Nissan has just revealed pricing for the 2020 Kicks subcompact crossover. For this year, Nissan’s third-best seller gets added standard safety equipment and an increase in price of $1,000 for the base model.

Nissan has added Safety Shield 360 to the Kicks as standard on all grades starting for 2020. That means a host of active driver aids including emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and high beam assist. For 2019, emergency braking was standard across the board while blind spot warnings and cross-traffic alerts were offered on the top SR trim. The rest of the features are all-new for 2020, and do a lot to explain the price increase. Mid-grade SV sees a price increase of $700 with top-spec SR up $600.

It’s an interesting strategy for Nissan, since the Kicks was just recently unseated by the new Hyundai Venue as the lowest-priced crossover in Canada. Instead of cutting the price, Nissan has upped the content of the cheerful but not all that small Kicks. That makes a Kicks with all of those desirable safety extras at $19,298 start for less than a similarly-equipped Venue. Since Hyundai adds them with the Preferred trim Venue, not the base Essential, Hyundai buyers would be looking at an MSRP of $21,499.

Like last year, the Kicks offers a single powertrain choice, a 1.6L four rated at 122 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque, combined with a CVT. The Kicks is offered only as a front-drive model, common among most of the vehicles in this segment, and a benefit as it seems to increase cargo space in the smallest of vehicles.

Nissan offers the Kicks with a floating roof look as well as five two-tone combinations on top of five solid paint colour options. It offers an available surround-view camera as well as a driver headrest speaker that gives a unique sound field experience. Nissan says that the Kicks also offers best in class front legroom.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks is available at dealers across Canada now.
